Sleep and Learning

Sleep is one of the least well understood factors that effect learning.  I guess it is a mystery because we are asleep at the time it happens!

What are we learning about sleep?
Researchers have clearly demonstrated that sleep is a complex process.

Just consider this list of purposes for sleep, generated by the Australian National Sleep Foundation:

• Release of hormones to regulate growth
• Release of hormones to regulate appetite
• Muscle repair
• Memory consolidation
• Restorative health

Clearly it is an important part of our lives and good sleep is a key to many areas of good health.  For children in the early years sleeping well will help them grow well, eat appropriately, repair and learn.

To read more, check out the 4 articles that we will be sending home with the weekly Early Years newsletters, starting this week.

Ask your children what they have learned about sleep in their first week back after the holiday break.
