Play, play, play

In real estate, the mantra is 'position, position, position'. In the early years it is 'play, play, play'.

We cannot overstate the importance of time for play!

The staff had a look at this VIDEO recently - to remind ourselves why play is SO important to young children in particular.

In this TEDx video, Peter Gray talks about the place of play in the development of mammals generally, and then in humans in particular.  Crucial to physical, social and emotional development and communication, problem solving and thinking skill development; play is the mechanism by which we learn and are set up for success in life.

Play deprived animals are unable to function successfully.   Peter Gray proposes that this is the same for humans.  Modern life restricts opportunities for children to play.  School, after school activities, lessons and classes all impose on children's playtime.

There has also been a number of societal changes that impact on play; such as a pervading belief that children only learn what adults teach and concerns about children's safety.

In the Early Years at BISP, we understand the importance of children initiating learning through play, exploring their interests, testing ideas, trying new experiences and extending skills through practice in play.  Our work is to provide the environment, observe and extend children's learning, track progress and use the curriculum as a guide to our planning for children.
